From the President

Messages from "presidents" of organizations are usually laced with words and phrases that warm and console us; phrases that comfort and relax us. This is not a warm and fuzzy recitation of past accomplishments, but rather a call to make an investment.

As I began this presidential year, I could not help but feel overwhelmed by the history of FMHCA. Likewise, I am encouraged and energized by the resiliency and determination of its members and leaders. Spending several days in Washington, D.C. during the recent AMHCA conference reminded me of the responsibility we face as FMHCA members as we begin to reshape the multiple roles of the mental health provider in this day and age. Walking the halls of the Capitol building reminded me that our nation's history as well as its future was and will be forged in those halls.

We are all faced with tough times. While the demand for services has skyrocketed, we face unprecedented funding cuts. Many of our clients are facing lay offs or have businesses which have been unable to withstand the economic pressures of this time thereby leaving many without medical coverage. Desperation, hardship, uncertainty, and crisis have grown exponentially while funding streams have diminished. More than ever counselors are filling critical roles occurring on every socioeconomic level.  Not since the Great Depression has our nation faced so many in such desperate situations. All at a time when it appears that there is an attempt to diminish our scope of practice by multiple sources.

Critical to our survival as professional counselors is the role of our lobbyist. We need to be more vigilant in advocating for mental health services. FMHCA is leading the way in changing and preserving the scope of practicing of mental health in Florida. We have chosen and collaborated with a lobbyist group that has in one legislative session proven a most valuable and watchful resource - we might even use the term "hyperviligant ally.”

Solidarity and parity are our goals - as an organization and as a state. Medicare reimbursement is a goal for the national organization and Medicaid reimbursement is a goal for our state. No one person can do it alone and no one group has enough position to effect these changes. together and we can make a difference and steer the future of LMHC's in Florida and in our nation.

What is the best investment we can make in this economy? It is an investment in ourselves and in our discipline/career. Where are you investing your assets? Please join us.
